چکیده

This paper gives a general view of a recently developed thermodynamic model of the thermoelastic rnartensitic transformation. Unlike existing empirical, mathematical or thermodynamic models, this generalised thermodynamic model can be used to understand and describe quantitatively the overall thermomechanical behaviour of polycrystalline shape memory alloys. Important points of difference between this and previous thermodynamic models are that the contributions of the stored elastic energy and of the crystal defects are also included. In addition, the mathematical approach and the assumptions in this model are selected in such a way that the calculations yield close approximations of the real behaviour and that the final mathematical equations are relatively simple. Several illustrations indicate that this model, in contrast to other models, can be used to understand the shape memory behaviour of complex cases. As an example of quantitative calculations, it is shown that this modelling can be an effective tool in the "design" of multifunctional materials consisting of shape memory elements embedded in matrix materials.

Generation of Recovery Stresses : Thermodynamic Modelling and Experimental Verification

Shape memory elements generate significant recovery stresses when the shape recovery associated with the reverse martensitic transformation is impeded during heating. This process of stress generation is influenced by many parameters. A fundamental model has been developed to describe this generation of recovery stresses. The model is based on a generalised thermodynamic analysis of shape memor...

Nonlinear Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour Analysis of Activated Composites With Shape Memory Alloy Fibres

General thermo-mechanical behavior of composites reinforced by shape memory alloy fibers is predicted using a three-dimensional analytical micromechanical method to consider the effect of fibers activation. Composite due to the micromechanical method can be exposed to general normal and shear mechanical and thermal loading which cause to activate the shape memory alloy fibers within polymeric m...

Nonlinear Hamiltonian modelling of magnetic shape memory alloy based actuators

This paper proposes an application of the Lagrangian formalism and its Hamiltonian extension to design, model and control a mechatronic system using Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys. In this aim, an original dynamical modelling of a Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy based actuator is presented. Energy-based techniques are used to obtain a coherent modelling of the magnetical, mechanical and thermodynamic...

Characterisation and Modelling of the Dynamic Behaviour of a Shape Memory Alloy Element

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are now well recognized as potential materials for structural control. The optimised integration of some SMA devices in a mechanical structure for passive structural damping requires a predictable modelling. At first experimental and numerical studies have been performed on a CuAlBe beam under harmonic flexion, leading to a qualitative modelling based on the material t...

Application of Shape Memory Alloys in Seismic Isolation: A Review

In the last two decades, there has been an increasing interest in structural engineering control methods. Shape memory alloys and seismic isolation systems are examples of passive control systems that use of any one alone, effectively improve the seismic performance of the structure. Characteristics such as large strain range without any residual deformation, high damping capacity, excellent re...
